Ivory prices have soared from $200 a kilogram in 2004 to more than $5000 today. Some expert’s estimate that as much as 35,000 elephants a year are being slaughtered (Big Life 2011). In the Chyulu Hills we are lucky enough to have three large tuskers. At different times of the year these elephants disappear.
Great Plains Conservation, Richard Bonham and others have been fascinated to know where these bulls migrate too. Along with Ian Douglass Hamilton and a private investor, two elephants were collared by the water hole in front of ol Donyo Lodge last week in a hope to monitor the bulls and help keep them from the danger of poachers by constantly knowing where they are when they are not on Mbirikani Group Ranch.
