April was been a wonderful month at Selinda Camp. Partly because easter fell during April this year and we had loads of families travelling together over the easter school breaks. It is always a pleasure to have younger guests who keep us on our toes with a plethora of questions, queries, ideas, observations and general all round fun! It is also magical to watch them come back from activities having just experienced the wonder that is the wilderness of Northern Botswana and specifically this our piece of paradise; Selinda Reserve.
Sightings have been excellent this month – lions, leopards, wild dogs, cheetah, hyena, servals – lots and lots of Elephants are making their way back from the seasonal waterholes and densely vegetated areas towards the spillway; the permanent source of water now which sees them through the coming dry months until the rains return in November. Hippos in the usual high numbers.
The wild dogs have been seen clearing a den at an exceptionally close area to camp! We hope they will den on the Selinda Reserve again this year and that will provide our guests the ability to marvel in awe at these rare and endangered canids.
The Selinda Canoe Trail is now in full swing. Josh, our specialist guide for the Canoe Trail, has had some superb first few trips. We’ve hosted guests here after they finish the canoe trail and we’ve had to nearly tranquilise them as the excitement of the trail causes them to babble like mad-men from the encounters and sights they had!
We’ve had some magical bush dinners with the moon high and full in the night sky – illuminating the surrounding landscapes with a gentle, soft light.
Winter is on the way now, the days are still in the lower 30’s celcius and nights falling to around 14 celcius. The sun rises a little further to the north each day as the earth orbits its way into winter. Sunrises and sunsets are extraordinary with hues of pinks, oranges, reds, purples – streaked with the occasional cloud which is the last reminder that summer has gone and winter makes its way to centre stage.
We’ve put together this collage of images taken in and around camp during April 2012. Enjoy!
