Selinda Camp is renowned for many things, Hippos being one of them. The last few days have seen the return of a local lone bull Hippo. Janet and Richard Hickons stayed with us for 3 nights and during their stay dubbed this fellow “Winston” as they thought he looked like Winston Churchill. We’ve decided to just refer to him as “Mr Kubu”; Kubu being the Setswana word for Hippo and the “Mr” as a mark of respect for this beautiful but sometimes dangerous animal.
It is lovely to be able to have these wonderful encounters from the safety of our main deck, and even the decks of our guests tents. It is not often that one can stand and observe this bulky herbivore as he crops grass, sedges and reeds at the edge of the water in camp.
Here’s a lovely shot Liz managed to get of Mr Kubu from our camp fire area…
We’d like to see some submissions from our readers here of what you think he is thinking with his one beady eye looking into the lense? Post you replies, we would love to hear from you.
